Our Family History

“Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.” JOEL 1:3

Soooo many ancestors ... so little time!
A generation that ignores history, has neither past nor future ...

The Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor was often an immigrants first view of the United States.

Immigrants landing in the Port of New York went to either Castle Gardens or Ellis Island - depending on when they arrived.

When Pauline arrived in NY, she was detained overnight and as she always talked about arriving in Castle Gardens, we assume she was detained there rather than at Ellis Island. During this detention she got meals for breakfast, dinner and supper. The cause of her detention is listed as: "sis" while others are listed as "bro". The detention disposition is listed as: Cousin, Mrs. Fanny Friedman, 325 E 8th Street, NYC. To date we do not know who Fanny Friedman is.

SAFER, Yitzchak Isaac

Yitzchack-Isaac and his wife, Mollie immigrated to the USA together on March 29, 1921 . He was 63 and she was 59 however their passports state he was born in 1861 and she was born in 1864 which would have made them 60 and 57 respectively. They may have intentionally changed their ages to seem younger than they were. They arrived on the Gothland and went to Philadelphia rather than New York because there was an influenza epidemic in NY at the time. When Yitzchack-Isaac and Mollie immigrated, they came over with: their son, Samuel (about 18); their twin daughters, Anna and May (about 14); their daughter Rachel (30) (aka Rose); and Rachel’s two children, Frank (9) and Fannie (7). Fruma Streleckaja is listed as 5’ 2” and a housewife and Scheine (Sophie) is listed as a "tailoress" and 5' 3". The ship manifest has a hand written note that they were discharged to son Israel at 274 So. 2nd Street, Brooklyn. NOTE: Two years later, on the 1915 NYS Census, Bessie (Zemser) (Sophie’s niece) and Jacob Weller were also listed as living at 205 So. 2nd Street in Brooklyn.

Upon immigration, the name was changed from Streleckaja to Strelser and Fruma at some point changed her name to Frances. NOTE: We have assumed that the Mariasha mentioned above was Sophie’s half-sister.

All of Fruma’s other children had immigrated prior to their arrival. Considering the US trayfe, ABRAHAM STRELETSKAJA choose not to leave Radin and died there within a few short years of FRUMA and SOPHIE emigrating.

ZEMSER, Bessie (WELLER

BESSIE immigrated to the US in January 1908. Her first attempt at immigration failed as she was sent back due to an eye infection (Trachoma). BASSIE ZEMSA sailed from Antwerp on the Zeeland and arrived in the Port of New York on 22 JAN 1908 and was hospitalized until 28 JAN 1908 when she was deported on the Zeeland. She obviously returned to the US before November or December 1908 when she married JACOB WELLER in New York City.

Having been denied entry to the US due to this eye infection, BESSIE may have returned under an assumed name, as we have not been able to find any record of her re-entry to the US.
